Academic CentreThe procedure for the development of the doctoral thesis is stipulated by the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Latvia in regulation of 27 December 2005 No. 1001 “Procedure and Criteria for Awarding a Doctoral Degree”, as well as the University of Latvia order of 12 April 2006 No. 1/95 “Regulations on Doctoral Councils and Doctorate at the University of Latvia”, the University of Latvia order of 12 July 2012 No. 1/201, establishing regulations for the development and execution of summaries of doctoral theses at the University of Latvia, as well as regulations of the faculties and fields of the University of Latvia.
When the Doctoral Council of the relevant field of the University of Latvia has concluded that the doctoral thesis complies with the criteria set down in the regulatory documents and the scientific competence of the council, and decides on accepting the doctoral thesis for public defense, the doctoral candidate must attend to publishing the doctoral thesis and its summary.
Doctoral Thesis
The simplest option is for the doctoral degree candidate him/herself to prepare the doctoral thesis for publication – to arrange an A4 MS Word file in accordance with the regulations for the development and execution of scientific papers in the relevant field of science and convert it to PDF format. This file can then be submitted to any print service provider offering the service of binding theses.
The doctoral thesis can also be prepared for publication at the University of Latvia Press, – here, after the author has prepared the work in accordance with the regulations for the development and execution of scientific papers, the specialists perform the ordered services (e.g., proofreading, image processing, layout, design of the cover according to the unified style of the University of Latvia, etc.), prepare the file in accordance with the printing requirements and send it to the partner company providing the printing services for the University of Latvia.
To order the preparation of the doctoral thesis at the University of Latvia Press, the degree candidate or the official in charge must complete the Application form for preparation of doctoral thesis and email it together with the files of doctoral thesis in MS Word format to apgads@lu.lv. The UL Press will issue a preliminary cost estimate for preparation of the work, coordinates it with the author or a structural unit of the University of Latvia and commences work. After completing the layout of the paper, the preliminary estimate can be adjusted according to the real situation. The delivery address of the printed doctoral thesis is agreed upon at the time of ordering.
Summary of Doctoral Thesis
The University of Latvia press prepares and ensures the publication of summaries of the doctoral thesis in a uniform style in accordance with the regulations adopted by the University of Latvia. The specialists of the UL Press make the required editorial corrections and prepare the layout of the summary.
To order the preparation of doctoral thesis’ summaries at the University of Latvia Press, the Application form for preparation of doctoral thesis summary must be completed and emailed together with both doctoral thesis summary files (summary in Latvian and summary in English or another language) MS Word A4 format to apgads@lu.lv.
(IMPORTANT: If the MS Word file contains diagrams, charts and images created in the core Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), they must be in an editable format (not converted to .jpg or .png). If the Word file contains diagrams, charts and images produced in other programs that are not part of the Microsoft Office core software packages (such as schemas constructed in Microsoft Visio, etc.), they must be emailed as separate vector graphics files (such as .eps, .pdf) or high resolution (300 dpi) raster graphics files (such as .tiff, .jpg, .png) exported from these programs.) The specialists of the UL Press perform the ordered services (e.g., proofreading, technical arrangement, image processing, layout, design of the cover according to the unified style of the University of Latvia, etc.), prepare the files in accordance with the printing requirements, receive the approval of the files by the author and send them to the partner company providing the printing services for the University of Latvia. The delivery address of the printed summary of the doctoral thesis is agreed upon at the time of placing the order.
