Summary
Criminal procedure has been subject to processes of historical evolution, constantly improving both the set of legal provisions for the detection and investigation of criminal offences, and clarifying the scope of activities, as well as the rights and obligations of the persons involved in criminal proceedings. Thus, the processes and results of the development of criminal procedure can also be viewed from the perspective of the effects incurred by these changes on the exercise of the powers conferred upon those exercising procedural functions. The author assesses the evolution of the institutionally established model of the right to defence in Latvian criminal proceedings, and the changes in the scope of the rights of the subjects vested with the respective function.
